Uluru is surrounded by a barren backdrop, characterised by bright red sands, tufts of sporadic greenery, and a flat, rocky landscape that seems to sprawl on forever.

For many, a trip to Uluru is a trip into the unknown; into the sparse outback that offers a taste of “real” Australia. It’s here where many Aboriginal traditions and cultures thrive. Where the iconic scenes of the country remain untouched by urbanisation.

But in the middle of it all, there’s Curtin Springs, an oasis in the desert. Set on the route to Uluru, it offers travellers the chance to lay down their heads and refuel. From here, continue on to some of the most breath-taking sights in Australia.

Located 100km east of Uluru and 360km southwest of Alice Springs, it’s in the ideal place for visitors wanting to explore the Uluru and the areas surrounding Kings Canyon. Curtin Springs is a working Cattle Station run by the Severin family, who have owned the plot since 1956. In their first year of business, they saw just 6 visitors pass through. Now, they cater to hundreds, if not thousands, of travellers who are eager to see Australia’s outback and its incredible landmarks.

The unique hospitality that the Severin family provides means travellers can connect with the region on another level. You’ll do more than just pass through here. Instead, enjoy locally made food, stock up on snacks from the station, and stay overnight to watch the sunrise.

There’s also a pub and camping spots for visitors to enjoy. Plus. the station now offers a selection of tours to some of the most well-known sights in the vicinity. For a true Australian vibe, there are a collection of emus and native birds wandering around that are reared by the Severin family.

Here are some of the facilities and amenities on offer at Curtin Springs.

  • Curtin Springs Wayside Inn

The on-site pub serves up a selection of home-cooked meals in a historic shed surrounded by lush gardens. It’s also home to 27 affordable rooms for visitors who want to stay the night.

  • Curtin Springs Paper

Handmade paper is another speciality of Curtin Springs. It’s made from native grasses found in and around the station and makes for the perfect souvenir.

  • Curtin Springs Station

The cattle station is home to more than 4000 animals, and it balances sustainable beef production with maintaining the natural world that surrounds it.
