There is no better place to stargaze than the Australian outback. Well away from urbanisation and light pollution, the skies are clear and bright.

Uluru is without a doubt one of Australia’s most recognizable landmarks. Set in the dusty orange outback and boasting a rich cultural history, it draws in millions of visitors every year.

By day, it is a haven of local heritage. Learn about local Indigenous culture through art, and stories. See native wildlife frolicking amongst the tufts of greenery in the sprawling landscape.

The scenery really is a sight to behold, and at night it becomes even more impressive.

As darkness falls, the clear blue Australian sky turns an inky black and the Milky Way appears in all its glory. Because Uluru is so far away from any urban areas, it promises an unrivalled star gazing opportunity. Certainly, here are the best views in the country, some might even argue the world!

The huge rusty monolith sitting below the stars and solar system is a memorable scene that you’ll remember forever.

With no artificial light in the outback that can interfere with the night sky, you get to see the Milky Way in the clearest way possible. And, thanks to Uluru’s location in the southern hemisphere, you can also catch a glimpse of some of the area’s sky objects. Look for the Magellanic clouds and the famous Southern Cross constellation.

The Milky Way

Here, where there is no light pollution, the Milky Way boasts enough power that you can see it even when the moon is shining at its brightest. And, what’s more, the moonset looks just like the sunset because of the hazy blur of the Milky Way.

It is fascinating to see the centre of our galaxy sitting snug above one of the world’s most prolific monuments. Once it has settled there, the Magellanic Clouds come out to play, which is why it takes on a hazy glow.

Luckily, the constellation is visible throughout the night, so you can marvel at its beauty for hours on end. Clouds go unnoticed, giving you the perfect opportunity to appreciate how far away from civilization you are.

To end the experience, wait for the sun to rise over Uluru. The moment the landscape changes from inky black to vibrant pinks, oranges, and reds is a magical moment. It marks the start of a new day, and the chance to learn more about this special part of Australia.
