How to Avoid Flies When You Visit Uluru

When is the worst time for flies? You’ll see the most flies around the hotter months in Australia. The summer months – December, or Jan/February will be rife with flies!

That’s because the warmer weather means…fly weather! The warm conditions are perfect breeding conditions for flies.

But while this might be the best time for flies to come out and thrive, it’s also a prime time for tourism.

Ultimately, you won’t be able to fully get rid of the flies at Uluru. Due to there being just so many flies around Uluru, you’ll encounter a fair few! However, there are some ways you can avoid them and make them a little less annoying.

1. Go on an early tour

The earlier in the morning, the cooler the temperatures are, so ultimately, you won’t see too many flies if you do an Uluru sunrise tour. What a perfect excuse to do an Uluru sunrise tour!

2. Wear brighter clothing

Flies tend to gravitate towards darker-coloured clothing because this offers them the ultimate camouflage. If you wear lighter-coloured clothing, then flies won’t want to land on your clothes as much.

3. Keep all food sealed and covered

Flies will love your food! They’ll try and share your meals with you when you’re not looking, so make sure you keep your food tightly sealed in an airtight container – or use a few layers of Glad Wrap to repel the flies.

4. Get a fly net to cover or protect your skin

By getting a fly net to cover your skin, you’ll have a pocket of space that makes it easier to breathe and reduces any anxieties about having the flies come into your ears, nose and eyes.

5. Avoid water sources

Getting away from water sources means you’ll be distant from these pesky flies! Flies love water, so by staying around water, you’re probably going to see heaps of flies in the area.
