What you should know about the Field of Light before you visit

Field of Light: Sunrise or sunset?

Uluru is one of the most breathtaking scenes in Australia. During sunrise, the sky is a creamy orange colour, and the sunset has pastel purple hues. It’s a landscape that seems to change colour by the minute.

Watching the sunrise or sunset at Uluru is a special experience in itself. But if you want to amplify the experience, you can visit the Field of Light installation for a touch of extra magic.

A beautiful display of lights

The Field of Light is a beautiful display – a carpet of solar-powered 50,000 fibre optic lights which illuminate hues of blue, orange, white and purple. Picture it… a flat desert floor lit with blues, whites, reds, oranges, and purple lights that softly sway in the wind.

When it’s dark, the landscape becomes absorbed in inky blackness.

The lights are all solar-powered fibre optics, ranging from lots of different colours. The light installation is designed to reflect the energy Munro felt at Uluru. Like most who visit Uluru, Brian described an energy to the area, a special radiance that could only be expressed through artwork. The whole project took 24 years, and what was supposed to be a temporary exhibition became an extremely popular tourist attraction.

The Anangu Aboriginal elders called it Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakunytjaku, which means ‘looking at lots of beautiful lights.’

Experiencing this bioluminescent phenomenon is a bucket list item while you’re in the Northern Territory, and here’s what you should know before you go!

1. Wear warm layers

No matter what time of year you’re visiting, the mornings and the evenings do get chilly! Prepare for the cooler desert temperatures. Don’t be fooled by the soaring temperatures of Uluru during the daytime. The flat desert landscapes hold the heat during the day, but it also gets very cold at night!

2. Book your accommodation close by

Most people book tours to the Field of Light from nearby accommodations. If you’re visiting really early in the morning, then you’re likely going to have to wake up really early in the morning!

Because of this, it’s a good idea to stay close to Uluru so that you don’t have to travel too far in the mornings.

3. Tickets sell out, so book in advance!

It can be booked out months in advance, so it’s advisable to book in advance to get yourself a decent spot! This is a very popular attraction, so if you’re planning on booking the tour separately (if you haven’t booked a package tour which includes the Field of Light), then make sure you book in advance, as availability can be low nearer the time.

Ticket types

Choose from a whole range of different ticket types when you visit Uluru! There are a few different tours at different times for you to experience the Field of Light.
